Wallissy Kandinsky was a Russian artist and art theorist that is commonly referred to as the pioneer of abstract art. He was born and raised in Russia and attended university to study art, law, and economics. He branched out and started painting at age 30. Settling in Munich for some time, he made a brief return to Russia, then back to Germany to teach at the Bauhaus school of art until the Nazi’s closed it in 1933. Then he made his finla move to France and remained there until his death.
Kandinsky believed that colors and shapes had ‘voices’ and sounds, and spent much of his career exploring and teaching his theories. Messages could be communicated without words. his theories focused on the basic geometric shapes (squares, circles, triangles) and primary colors (blue, red, yellow) and the power and depth in the simplistic. For example, the circle is the ‘most peaceful’ shape and represents the human soul. He expands on these theories in “Point and Line to Plane”, published in 1926.
“Everything starts from a dot.”
“The nightmare of materialism, which has turned the life of the universe into an evil, useless game, is not yet past; it holds the awakening soul still in its grip.”
Lend your ears to music, open your eyes to painting, and… stop thinking! Just ask yourself whether the work has enabled you to ‘walk about’ into a hitherto unknown world. If the answer is yes, what more do you want?
