Ahhhh – Yacht rock! 🙂 Cool Change by the Little River Band might be one of the quintessential yacht rock songs. It’s lyrics are pretty straight forward about getting out to the ocean and away from all the things life throws at you. It’s one you cannot help but sing along to every time you hear it.
For me, it’s a reminder to get away from the overwhelm of life and touches my soul for with a longing to be silent and listen to the natural world and universe – especially that around the sea and sand. I’m not much of a sailor – I like boats, but I have no interest in captaining them, so this is more about being the captain of my life and determining what waters I will be part of. Being born under the the true water sign, it is a fact that being in and near the water with the moon bring out the best in me.
As lovers of everything sea related and children of the 70s, this song will forever bind me to the best two big sisters a girl could dream of!
This song was written by Little River Band lead singer Glenn Shorrock at a time when tensions ran high in the band. Shorrock, who told Songfacts that he and guitarist Graeham Goble were like “chalk and cheese,” needed a cool change from the internecine squabbles. In this song, he goes into reverie, dreaming of spending some tranquil time to himself in nature.
At the time, he kept this interpretation under wraps, but Shorrock later admitted the song was a “cry for help.”

If there's one thing in my life that's missing It's the time that I spend alone Sailing on the cool and bright clear water There's lots of you friendly people They're showing me ways to go And I never want to lose their inspiration Time for a cool change I know that it's time for a cool change And now that my life is so prearranged I know that it's time for a cool change Well, I was born in the sign of water And it's there that I feel my best The albatross and the whales, they are my brothers It's kind of a special feeling When you're out on the sea alone Staring at the full moon like a lover Time for a cool change I know that it's time for a cool change Now that my life is so prearranged I know that it's time for a cool change Well I've never been romantic And sometimes I don't care I know it may sound selfish But let me breathe the air Yeah, yeah If there's one thing in my life that's missing It's the time that I spend alone Sailing on the cool and bright clear water It's kind of a special feeling When out on the sea alone Staring at the full moon like a lover Time for a cool change Time for a cool change Now that my life is so prearranged Well I know, I know, I know it's time for a cool, cool change
