Pierre-Auguste Renoir is a notable French Impressionist and contemporary of another artist already featured in Art Master Monday – Claude Monet. He, along with a group of artists, created the Impressionist movement when they were snubbed by the Salon Paris. His early works were typical of the movement, and depicted intimate, candid scenes of real life. Renoir favored soft images of girls and women, using a dreamy color palette.
Renoir split from the Impressionists in the mid-1880s and moved to a more formal and disciplined technique, focusing on portraits and figures, especially female nudes. He was very dedicated to his art and continued long into old age, even as his body was being ravaged by arthritis.
“Art is about emotion; if art needs to be explained it is no longer art.”
Renoir on art being rooted in emotion
“Is it worth getting worked up about Renoir?” asked Smee. “He is an artist I detest most of the time. Such a syrupy, falsified take on reality.”
