Not everyone these days is familiar with Charlie Rich, aka The Silver Fox, but this was another favorite from my mama’s collection that I remember singing over and over. Growing up in Memphis, music was just part of life! An interesting bit of trivia…I don’t remember all the details of how and who, but when I was young, I trick-or-treated at the gates of Charlie Rich’s home. He wasn’t personally there, of course, but I do recall putting the two together and being a bit star-struck. Funny how some memories like that fade.
Charlie Rich started out in blues/jazz, and eventually made his way to Sun Records to be a session musician for stars like jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, and others. He had a bit of a volatile career with several big hits in the 70s when he became quite well known. Many of his hits became cross-overs, including “The Most Beautiful Girl” and in 1974, the CMA named him Entertainer of the Year. His off stage predilections would start to cause issues, which resulted in an embarassing incident at teh next awards ceremony. Even though his popularity took a dive, he recorded one more hit and then moved back into the jazz genre.
“Charlie Rich had the intuitive instinct to feel, see and hear pain, disappointment, happiness and joy and somehow transmute it into music. I don’t know anyone who has ever written or sung in a way that depicted more of the humanity of man, with greater melodic beauty, than Charlie Rich.”
— Sam Phillips founder of Sun Records
If you are ready to step back into the 70s and hear the Silver Fox croon…Give it a listen below!
Hey, did you happen to see The most beautiful girl in the world? And if you did, was she crying, crying? Hey, if you happen to see The most beautiful girl that walked out on me Tell her, I'm sorry Tell her, I need my baby Oh, won't you tell her that I love her I woke up this morning Realized what I had done I stood alone in the cold gray dawn I knew I'd lost my morning sun I lost my head and I said some things Now comes the heartaches that the morning brings I know I'm wrong, I couldn't see I let my world slip away from me So Hey, did you happen to see The most beautiful girl in the world? And if you did, was she crying, crying? Hey, if you happen to see The most beautiful girl that walked out on me Tell her, I'm sorry Tell her, I need my baby Oh, won't you tell her that I love her If you happen to see The most beautiful girl that walked out on me Tell her, I'm sorry Tell her, I need my baby Oh, won't you tell her that I love her
