Tune In Tuesday-Social Distortion “Highway 101”

Time for another Rock and Roll love song!! And it’s from one of the best in the land – it’s Social D’s Highway 101!!

The lyrics (below) and the song really speak for themselves, but you’ll find that there isn’t a lot of room for mushy, traditional love songs (outside of some Elvis and an 80s tune or two) in the Simpson household. When we met, one of the things that clued us in that we were a perfect match was our shared appreciation for punk/new wave/alternative music. We were both 70s/80s kids and liked all the typical music of those ears and older, but we really connected with the songs and lyrics of artists like The Cult, Social D, Echo and the Bunnymen, and others. Neither of us had much use for a lot of newer ‘music’, because so much of it is garbage or canned talent. Music needs to have heart and soul – even if it’s black and crusty!

Mike Ness and the guys of Social D always deliver. A little more mature now than in their early punk days, they can still put on a show. We’ve seen them a few times together in these later years. Many favorite songs, but ‘Highway 101″ speaks to our travelling hearts. We love visiting SoCal and actually driving on the 101 up and down the coast to some of our favorite small towns!

Now in their fourth decade, Ness and Social Distortion have officially done one of the most non-punk things possible: They’ve failed to burn out.

If this song doesn’t make you want to climb into a convertible ’68 Stingray with your sick girl or boy by your side to go racing down California’s Highway 101 to the next surf spot or chase the sunset/moonlight on the beach, nothing ever will!

Give it a listen below!

Take a drive baby up the coast, yeah Highway 101
I'll pass Ventura Santa Barbara too, Just as fast as my motor runs
Gotta pocket full of memories, some are happy and some are sad
Gotta girl standing by my side, through the good times and the bad

Listen to the boulevard, listen to the falling rain
I believe in love now, with all of its joys and pains

Sick boy, sick girl, looking nice dressed up on a Saturday night
Take a walk downtown for awhile and chase the pale moonlight
I can still hear the mission bells and the train rollin' through your town
Gonna leave this world behind, we're Southern California bound

Listen to the boulevard, listen to the falling rain
I believe in love now, with all of its joys and pains
Follow the palm trees under the California sun
I believe in love now, I believe in love again

Listen to the boulevard, listen to the falling rain
I believe in love now, with all of its joys and pains
Follow the palm trees under the California sun
I believe in love now, I believe in love again

Do you connect with lyrics, music, or both? What are some of your favorite ‘love’ or ‘anti-love’ songs??
