For our new series (and since it’s February!), I’m starting with the most beautiful love songs ever written by one of the very best rock bands of all time. Led Zeppelin’s “Thank You” is delicate and amazing. Although it does not fully showcase the talents of the GOAT drummer, John Bonham, it absolutely shines on the lyrics of Robert Plant, the acoustical talent of Jimmy Page’s guitar, and John Paul Jones on the organ.
When I got married, I used this as a reading during the ceremony, because it spoke to the love that I had waited for and finally found. I’ve always been tied to song lyrics and often used them to express feelings, especially strong emotions that are hard to express in words. All of the posts in this series will have special meaning to me, especially in some of my ‘tumultuous’ years – finding my way in the world that wasn’t always kind or understanding. It took me a long time to find self-awareness and my own voice, which led to some bad choices and rough roads. While I may not choose to travel those roads any longer, I know that they provided me a colorful, wonderful, and rich life to be envied. Reading or listening to lyrics from songs can bring back memories as strong as some smells can. Music is very cathartic and healing – do you allow it to be in your life??
Record producer Rick Rubin remarked on the song’s structure: “The delicacy of the vocals is incredible; the acoustic guitar and the organ work together to create an otherworldly presence.”
I can’t say that I could ever choose a ‘favorite’ song of Led Zeppelin…but “Thank You” is definitely one of the top 5!
Give it a listen below!
If the sun refused to shine I would still be loving you When mountains crumble to the sea There will still be you and me Kind woman, I give you my all Kind woman, nothing more Little drops of rain whisper of the pain Tears of loves lost in the days gone by My love is strong, with you there is no wrong Together we shall go until we die My, my, my inspiration is what you are to me Inspiration look, see And so today, my world it smiles Your hand in mine, we walk the miles Thanks to you it will be done For you to me are the only one Happiness, no more be sad Happiness, I'm glad If the sun refused to shine I would still be loving you Mountains crumble to the sea There will still be you and me
